White Station high school JROTC

To motivate young people to be better citizens.

Welcome New and Returning Cadets !

JROTC is an elective course taught at White Station, as well as 25 other high schools in the Memphis City Schools.  Founded in 1967, the JROTC unit, known as the Spartan Battalion, has a long and rich tradition as a cornerstone of the academically reputable White Station High.  First and foremost "The mission of JROTC is to motivate young people to be better citizens."  Curriculum consists of a wide spectrum of subjects from American History, to Leadership Theory, to reviews of the Constitution, and even CPR/First Aid.  Students involved in JROTC are known as “cadets,” and courses are taught by retired officer and enlisted army personnel, or Army Instructors (AI’s), who act as teachers, mentors, and facilitators to the largely student run program.

Cadets wear cost-free provided uniforms once a week on Wednesday, at which time they are evaluated on both their appearance and  curriculum knowledge.  Participation in the program increases incrementally by years, as upperclassmen are slated to take on greater responsibility and rank.  Cadets direct the skills they’ve learned in class and in positions of leadership towards planning and organizing service learning projects, student directed learning activities, battalion social events (like the annual military ball, Wednesday inspections, and the annual mass inspection)

Students involved with JROTC are from a diverse range of backgrounds and interests.  Cadets are active in the student body and have been officers of the executive board and student government, club presidents, varsity football and cross country runners, and even actively involved in modern ballet.
